Common questions

A selection of the questions we are regularly asked. Each individual service page contains more detailed FAQs.

How often should a commercial fire alarm be serviced?

Service frequency depends on the premises, system and fire-safety arrangements. Commercial systems are commonly inspected at planned intervals during the year. We can review the existing records and help establish an appropriate maintenance schedule.

Can you take over maintenance of an existing fire alarm?

Yes. We can inspect an existing system, review its condition and available documentation, identify defects or outstanding recommendations, and provide ongoing servicing where the system is supportable.

How often should emergency lighting be tested?

Emergency lighting normally needs both regular functional checks and periodic duration testing as part of a planned maintenance regime. The exact arrangements should reflect the site, system and fire-safety procedures.

Can you replace failed emergency lights during a service?

Yes, subject to access, parts and authorisation. We can identify failed fittings and complete replacement or remedial work as part of a planned visit or follow-up works.

How often do fire extinguishers need servicing?

Portable fire extinguishers are normally included in a regular inspection and maintenance programme. The required checks depend on the equipment type, condition and site arrangements.

Can you supply replacement extinguishers?

Yes. We can replace damaged, missing or unsuitable extinguishers and provide new equipment for new or altered premises.

What is a critical alert or lockdown system?

It is a dedicated alerting system used to quickly communicate a predefined emergency or operational message across a building or site. The exact design depends on the environment and the response plan.

Can a critical alert system work without the normal Wi-Fi network?

Some systems can operate independently of the customer's everyday Wi-Fi or internet connection. The right architecture depends on the selected equipment and required notification features.

Can you upgrade an older CCTV system to IP cameras?

Yes. Depending on the existing cabling and equipment, we can design a phased or complete upgrade to an IP CCTV system.

Can CCTV be viewed remotely?

Most modern IP CCTV systems can support secure remote viewing when the site network and customer requirements allow it.

Can I control a business intruder alarm from an app?

Many modern systems support secure app-based control and notifications. Features depend on the alarm platform, connectivity and customer requirements.

Can you take over an existing intruder alarm?

Often yes. We can inspect an existing system, confirm supportability and provide recommendations for servicing, repairs or upgrade.

Can access control be fitted to an existing door?

Usually, yes. The door, locking hardware, fire strategy, escape requirements and available cabling all need to be considered before selecting equipment.

Can you add a new door to an existing access control system?

Often yes, subject to spare capacity, software licensing, compatibility and network availability.

What is the difference between Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6A?

They are different categories of twisted-pair data cabling with different performance capabilities and installation requirements. The best choice depends on required speed, distance, environment, existing equipment and budget.

Can you install just one or two additional data points?

Yes. We undertake both small additions and larger structured cabling projects.

When should fibre be used instead of copper data cabling?

Fibre is commonly used for longer links, higher-capacity network backbones and connections between buildings or cabinets where copper distance limitations or electrical considerations are important.

Can you install fibre between two buildings?

Yes. Inter-building fibre is a common application, subject to suitable routes, containment and site access.

Do you install commercial Wi-Fi access points?

Yes. We install and replace access points, provide the required data cabling and support the physical network infrastructure around the APs.

Can you install access points supplied by our IT provider?

Yes. We often work from customer or IT-provider instructions where the equipment, configuration or cloud management is handled separately.

What is the difference between a fire door and a normal door?

A fire door forms part of a building's passive fire protection and is designed as an assembly to resist fire and smoke for a specified period when correctly installed and maintained.

Can damaged fire doors be repaired?

Some defects can be remediated, while others may require replacement. The correct approach depends on the door set, certification, damage and required performance.

What is a fire risk assessment?

A fire risk assessment is a structured review of fire hazards, people at risk, existing fire precautions and the actions needed to manage fire safety in the premises.

When should a fire risk assessment be reviewed?

It should be reviewed regularly and when significant changes occur, such as alterations, a change of use, changes in occupancy or major changes to fire precautions.
